Rivals…and Friends – the Purdue vs. IU Party

9 Feb

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a diehard Purdue fan. I bleed black and gold, which is disturbing to phlebotomists when I have to get my blood drawn but, don’t worry, it’s healthy.

For those of you who don’t know Indiana, the rivalry between Purdue and Indiana University is one of epic proportions.

Purdue has alumni like Neil Armstrong and Orville Redenbacher, so clearly we have brains and awesomeness on our side. And outer space. But, last night, the most important happening at Purdue was the basketball game between the old rivals. John (who is an honorary Boilermaker) and I couldn’t make it up to West Lafayette ourselves, so we decided to have a party instead, and of course invited many of the local Boilermakers we know.

After graduating from Purdue I moved down to Indy, where I have since become friends with a shocking number of IU graduates. I have to admit, they’re not all that bad. Usually. So, we invited some of them, too!

This was also a particularly important event because it was the very first party we’ve ever had at our house. I just moved here in late December and we’ve both been so busy in the meantime that we’ve barely had time to unpack. Here’s what the living room currently looks like:

Despite the fact that I just posted the above picture on the Internet, I hated for people to see our house looking anything less than perfectly arranged, painted, and decorated…but at this rate, we wouldn’t have a party until about 2013. So, we cleaned it up to the best of our abilities and invited everyone over.

I’m so glad we did!

Everyone represented either Purdue or IU in some way, even if just through trash talking. There was also a lot of food and alcohol, two things that both Boilers and Hoosiers can agree make a good party.

Check out those IU cookies. As a Boilermaker, I’m obligated to say that they’re disgusting, but I was actually a little impressed by the school spirit from my friend Brian. (Not shown: about 7 different kinds of alcoholic beverages.)

We watched the game, but mostly we were talking, joking, making fun of each others’ schools, and learning about things like facial hair, keeping kosher, and pilot lights. Fun and educational!

The party was a blast and (I think!) everyone really enjoyed themselves, despite the bitter rivalry. Definitely the first of many parties we’ll have here at the house.

For now, it’s time for me to be actually productive before getting ready for work tonight. I’ll be writing my first Wedding Wednesday post on here sometime later today, too, because I can’t just be productive all day.
